About Wife After Prison™

Wife After Prison™ was not created in a boardroom. It was born from real life—from pain, unanswered questions, and a reality few people talk about after incarceration ends.

It started when I reconnected with Kevin—my first love, my then-husband, and my forever friend—after 38 years apart. When we reunited, Kevin had already been home for four years. We built a life together believing the hardest part was behind us. But within three years of our marriage, I began to see something I couldn’t explain: emotional shutdown, distance, anger, mistrust, and struggles that neither of us had words for.

We were facing something deeper than reentry challenges. We were experiencing the hidden impact of incarceration long after release.

I searched for answers and found very few. No meaningful conversations. No practical guidance. No shared language to help families understand what they were experiencing. I realized that while people talked about getting out of prison, very few were talking about what happens after prison.

So I built what I couldn’t find.

Out of that need, Wife After Prison™ was born.

Today, Wife After Prison™ is a platform for education, awareness, and understanding. Through books, training, speaking, coaching, and PICS-informed education, I help individuals, families, professionals, and communities better understand the psychological, emotional, and relational impact of incarceration.

From Alaska to Australia, London to communities across the United States, this work has carried a simple message: what is often misinterpreted must first be understood.

This work is my commitment to creating C.L.E.A.R.—Clarity, Language, Education, Awareness, and Response—around the hidden impact of incarceration.

“I built what I couldn’t find—and what I believe every family affected by incarceration deserves: clarity, language, understanding, and a path forward.”

— Shelia Bruno, Founder of Wife After Prison™

My Commitment

At Wife After Prison™, our commitment is clear: to create C.L.E.A.R.—Clarity, Language, Education, Awareness, and Response—around the hidden impact of incarceration.

Through PICS-informed education, resources, training, and speaking, I help individuals, families, professionals, and communities better understand the psychological, emotional, and relational effects of incarceration. My goal is to provide the language, insight, and practical tools needed to move beyond misinterpretation and toward more effective responses.

Understanding changes conversations. Understanding changes relationships. Understanding changes outcomes.

Meaningful change begins when we can accurately identify what we are seeing and respond with greater awareness. That journey starts here.

Welcome to Wife After Prison™, where we are creating shared language around the hidden impact of incarceration—one conversation, one family, and one community at a time.

Real Stories. Real Understanding. Real Talk.

These books explore the realities of life after prison, the hidden impact of incarceration, and the adaptive patterns that often follow release. Through lived experience, education, and practical insight, they help readers make sense of what they are seeing, feeling, and experiencing.

“What you are doing with your book and messages is going to have an impact for DECADES to come. You discuss critically important issues in a way that the public will understand them and begin to ‘care’. Thank you!!” – Dr. Lisa, Expert on Suicide in Jails, Prisons, and Juvenile Justice

“This book clearly breaks down what those of us who have experienced incarceration go through (mentally) as we navigate the process of reintegrating back into society. As much as we appreciate the fact that we’ve been blessed with this opportunity to rejoin society, we can’t pretend that incarceration didn’t affect our mental well-being.”  – Jose Burgos, Formerly Incarcerated
